It was a grand failure - but I made up my own house rules, got some nice fleets built when they were still cheap, and the miniatures themselves are excellent quality. It's not a bad deal, it's just a basic truth that WotC won't be expanding it.

Yeah I heard that it was pretty bad too. The minis looked really cool, though. What's so good about the Star Destroyers that made them so expensive?

They're just iconic. It's like how Vader, JH - or Darth Revan, to a greater extent - aren't really playable, but people are willing to spend so much money on them. And there's nothing cooler than having a fleet of ten Star Destroyers to keep those Rebels in line.

Huh. That would be cool. So what was good in that game? Like, TIE Fighters?

It depended on your strategy. Just like fielding melee squads, fast squads, shooter squads, etc all have their own role in SWM, you could field a lot of capital ships, a flagship and a frigate, a few capital ships and fighters, or lots of fighters launching out of a single capital ship. I usually liked to play prototypical fleet builds - balanced fleets. TIE fighters were infinite, too, which meant that they kept respawning after they were destroyed, so you had to go after the ISDs.

Huh. It does sound quite interesting, but it seems WotC's execution of the game was pretty bad.

Yeah - my house rules made it way more fun. The issue with the WotC version was the fact that everything could shoot at everything - there were no walls, so no strategy (in practice). But, you put in range limits - you know, 2 squares for fighters, 4 for frigates, 6 for capital ships and flagships - and there's strategy, right there.

Lol. Wow. What a failure. A TIE Fighter shooting dozens of miles, and actually hitting an X-Wing that's travelling at over 2000 Gs? Yeah right. Weird how WotC would do that. I could see big ships shooting that far, but not the smaller ships. Can fighters actually damage big Star Destroyers? Or do they have to use special weapons like torpedos or something?

Yeah, they can. If they can get through the shields. Torpedoes do more damage, though. It was dumb because the ships just ended up shooting each other. It came down to dice rolls.

Lol. Doesn't seem like much fun without ranges. It was just open space you would fight on? No, like asteroids or anything to block sight?

That was the problem. No strategy - just shooting. Whole fleets disappeared in a volley.

Lol. Yeah. Based on what little I know of the game, I guess the strategy would be based on which way the ships are facing.

Right - but the defense is highest head on, and the attack is highest on broadsides. So really, it's just maneuvering to get behind the enemy with your broadside facing their rear.

Yeah, pretty much. Are Unique ships like Slave I and the Millenium Falcon any good?

I don't have either one of them.
